Document translations for the Engineering Council

Many engineering positions and roles in the UK require membership of a professional engineering institution licensed by the Engineering Council. You must register with a relevant Engineering Council institution to work under any of the following titles:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng)
  • Incorporated Engineer (IEng)
  • Engineering Technician (EngTech)
  • Information and Communications Technology Technician (ICTTech)

There are a number of different licensed professional engineering institutions which can offer membership and registration with the Engineering Council – see the full list here. Each of these institutions is focused on a different discipline of engineering, so it is best to register with the institution that most closely matches your area of expertise.

After you have registered with a professional engineering institution, you must then notify them of your intent to gain one of the professional titles listed above. The process will vary from institution to institution, but you will then go through a process of recording professional development, completing professional assessments and finally receiving certification.

Throughout the process of joining a professional engineering institution and gaining a professional title, you will need to provide evidence of your previous experience, qualifications and background (the exact evidence will vary from institution to institution).

If any of this required evidence is not in English, you may have to provide certified translations of your documents. These may include:

  • Professional references
  • Degree certificates or academic transcripts
  • Overseas criminal record checks
